Award Recipient of the 2007 Telecommunicator of the Year for the Texas Commissions on State Emergency Communications Here is a brief part of the nomination letter that was submitted to the Texas Commissions on State Emergency Communications for Cristal Guardiola, 9-1-1 operator for the Dallas Fire-Rescue Department. Cristal Guradiola was scared, but she never hesitated. A father was calling for help because his ten month old son was not breathing. Cristal confirmed the location of the emergency and the gravity of the situation before transferring the Spanish speaking caller to Fire/EMS Dispatch. She provided the information necessary to start an ambulance speeding toward the little boy. She then translated for Fire Dispatch so that CPR instructions could be given to the Spanish speaking caller. After she repeated the instructions a couple of times, she finally heard the father say, “He is breathing.” Paramedics arrived and she disconnected the line. Then it hit her . She had acted promptly and perfectly when seconds counted…..when a tiny life was in her hands………when something had to be done before field responders could arrive. She had translated CPR instructions to the father and prayed for the baby. After she heard the father say, “He is breathing,” she felt that special kind of emotional high that only a few of us can understand. She had helped to save a baby’s life. Cristal believes that GOD has put her on this path for a reason and that is to help save lives. We agree with her. Sometimes the minutes between the time a call is received and when help can arrive to the scene of the emergency are the most critical and life saving minutes. In this case, they meant the difference between life and death. Cristal is a true lifesaver.
