The Dallas Fire-Rescue Explorers meet in Classroom 2 at the Dodd Miller Training Academy which is located at 5000 Dolphin Road on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at 7pm. The Post will also have some Saturday training days 4 to 6 times a year. The Post will also volunteer to help with other activities of the Fire Department such as the Easter Egg Hunt, Awards Banquet, MDA,etc. WHAT CAN AN EXPLORER DO? Basically the Explorer can do anything the Station Officer and the Advisor feel comfortable letting them do. Safety is the primary factor in these decisions. Explorers will help with housework and other daily duties around the station. Explorers will learn and assist with equipment operations and can be utilized if the officer and the Advisor feels confident that he or she is competent in the skills needed. Some examples would be: changing air bottles, loading hose, starting equipment and light overhaul to name a few items. An Explorer can be at the station from 8am till 10pm. Many will stay for shorter periods of time depending on their schedule. Explorers are not to ride out for more then 48 hours per month. This may be changed during the summer months when school is out but this has not been decided on yet. IMPORTANT: The officer of the station has the final say as to how long the Explorer can stay at the station. Female Explorers will always be assigned to a female advisor. They will always be at the station together, especially at night. Separate sleeping quarters are the best options when available otherwise use your best judgment on sleeping arrangements. Unfortunately firefighting clothes are not in the budget as of yet. An Explorer may borrow turn out gear if the person whose gear is to be borrowed gives permission. No firefighting clothes will be used without the express permission of that person. IN GENERAL AN EXPLORER IS ALLOWED TO DO WHAT EVER THE STATION OFFICER AND HIS OR HER ADVISOR FEELS COMFORTABLE WITH. SAFETY BEING THE GUIDING FACTOR.
WHAT A EXPLORER CANNOT DO. An Explorer at no time will enter the hot zone. Once an area has been deemed safe an Explorer can enter with his advisor and or the officer. Proper protective clothes and equipment must be in place for the Explorer. At no time will Explorer be allowed to enter Vice type businesses unless his or her safety cannot be guaranteed outside the structure. Use good judgment when determining whether an Explorer should not enter an emergency scene. Remember that some things may not be suitable for young adults to see. Maturity levels of these youth will vary and it will take some experience knowing what the Explorer can handle. An Explorer will not drive city equipment. They are allowed to operate the pumps and aerial ladders when in training situations ONLY.
