Dallas Fire- Rescue Academy

Q. How long is the Academy?

A. the Dallas Fire-Rescue Academy lasts approximately 6 months and consists of a 40 hour work week. Recruits should successfully complete both Firefighting training and EMT-basic.

Q. After successful completion of DFR Academy what happens next?

A.  Recruits will be temporarily assigned to a fire station and attend paramedic school every 2nd or 3rd day. 

Q. How are the recruits compensated?

A. Recruits are considered conditional employees of the City of Dallas, and are entitled to all the benefits and pay.

Q. What if I am already a certified Firefighter/EMT/Paramedic?

A. Before assignment all recruits are required to be certified by Texas Fire Commission.  Those individuals already certified with the state of Texas are provided instruction that is specific to Dallas Fire-Rescue.

Q. Once I successfully complete paramedic school what happens?

A. After successful completion of paramedic school fire-rescue probationary fire and rescue officers (F&RO) will be assigned to either a permanent or temporary assignment.

Q. Do firefighters get a uniform allowance?

A. Uniforms, T-shirts and turnout gear are provided by the Fire Department.  Sleepwear and footwear must be provided by the individual firefighter.

Q. What are the work hours?

A. Each shift is 24 hours long.  The shift begins at 7:00 a.m. and ends the following day at 7:00 a.m.  Each shift is followed by 48 hours off.

Q. Do firefighters get to sleep during this 24 hour period?

A. Every station accommodates a crew for 24 hours.  This includes a kitchen, a dormitory, exercise facilities, a station library, showers and restrooms. Sleeping is permitted during designated times, as is working out, and studying.

Q. Is it harder for a woman to get hired?

A. Dallas Fire-Rescue is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate against race or gender.  Both men and women have to pass the same physical ability test and other exams required for employment with Dallas Fire-Rescue.

 Q. Are fire stations equipped for females?

A. Dallas Fire-Rescue is currently retro-fitting fire stations with separate bathroom facilities and sleeping quarters.  However, until all stations have male and female accommodations, all personnel work together in an atmosphere of mutual respect and consideration.

Q. How does DFR contend with Military obligations?

A. DFR members with Military obligations receive 15 paid days per year.
