Through the years, Dallas Fire-Rescue has promoted fire safety through educational presentations, media press releases, advertisements and door-to-door campaigns.  Always looking for innovative ways to promote safety, the Inspection & Life Safety Education Division of Dallas Fire-Rescue has placed graphic artwork promoting the importance of smoke alarms on three of its city-owned vehicles.

Each vehicle is wrapped with artwork and fire safety messages, such as Smoke Alarms Save Lives  and Have an Exit Plan.   The artwork was funded by a grant awarded through the Federal Emergency Management Agencys Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.  The grant awarded funding to purchase 2000 smoke alarms to be installed in homes in Dallas and funding to advertise the smoke alarm installation program.   By driving these vehicles to educational programs and special events, the Inspection Division will be able to promote the importance of smoke alarms, fire escape plans and fire safety throughout Dallas.

Safety Alert

Inspection and Life Safety Education provides for the prevention of fire through fire inspections and code enforcement activities. Emphasis is given to education during the code enforcement process so that the owner or manager is made aware of the necessity for fire prevention measures. Also, enforcement of the fire code allows for identification of unsafe property such as open, vacant structures which are a danger to the community and firefighters. Inspection and Life Safety Education offers a variety of programs to teach young and old about fire safety and fire prevention.

Fire Prevention Officers, with the assistance of various volunteer groups, respond to citizens needs by installing smoke alarms in the residences of people that lack this protection. After each preventable fire death, Fire Prevention Officers go door-to-door in the neighborhood where the fire occurred and talk to neighbors about the importance of fire safety. This offers an opportunity to install smoke alarms where none exist or provide fresh batteries for existing alarms. Those tragedies that occur close to home can often be used to make people more aware of the dangers in their own home and give them an opportunity to prevent such an occurrence.

Fire Extingusher Demonstrations

This is a practical demonstration of the correct techniques for use of fire extinguishers.  After a film and instructions have been given, a small fire is set in a tub and Fire Prevention personnel demonstrate how to extinguish the fire.  The group members are encouraged to use the fire extinguisher.  This program is aimed at adult audiences especially in industrial, restaurant, hotel, hospital and other commercial occupancies.  Dallas Fire-Rescue provides all equipment except for the fire extinguishers.
