DFD
Joins
The Kids & Cops trading card program is an
extremely successful initiative that creates
positive interaction between police officers and
children in the first through third grades. The
cards have proven to be an effective
intervention tool that breaks down barriers
between youth and police. Dallas Fire-Rescue has
joined a historical and distinguished group of
law enforcement agencies to support and promote
this program. As DFD has active peace officers
in their Arson and Fire Investigation Division
and Chief Burns is a state certified peace
officer and arson investigator, Chief Burns and
Captain Sam Stephenson with Arson K9 Gunnar have
been inducted into the 11th Edition. Section
Chief Debbie Mullins with Arson K9 Ashly was the
first Fire Department member to join the program
when they were inducted into the 10th Edition.
Kids
& Cops is a youth intervention program targeted
at younger children. The cards have proven to be
an effective tool for building better
relationships between youth and law enforcement
personnel. Kids & Cops Trading Cards are similar
to sports trading cards. Officers attend the
Kids & Cops events and autograph the trading
cards given to the children.
The Dallas Police trading card series began
in 1994 and they enlisted the Fire Department in
2002. Since its’ inception, about 350 officers
have appeared on training cards and more than
3.5 million cards have been given to youth all
over the world. This year, the 11th Edition,
inducted 78 Officers on 60 different trading
cards from six agencies: Dallas Fire, Police,
Sheriff and Independent School District,
The
Texas Rangers, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco,
Firearms and Explosives and the Federal Bureau
of Investigation.
Kids & Cops has been sponsored by Kroger
Companies, Guaranty Bank, Dallas Children’s
Charities and the North Texas Crime Commission.
Our members attended the initial Event during
the State Fair of Texas. All the inductees
worked shifts as hundreds of children lined up
to collect the cards.
