Dallas Morning News FIREMAN, ASLEEP AT STATION, DIES VICTIM OF STROKE A.S. PHIFER Hoseman A.S. Phifer, 47, was found dead in his bed at Engine Company No. 22, Keating and Frank streets, at 10:30 o'clock Saturday night, when Capt. R.L. Sarver went to rouse him when a fire alarm was sounded in their district. His death is believed to have been caused by a heart stroke. Phifer returned Saturday afternoon after spending several days in East Texas visiting his mother , who is critically ill. Being weary from loss of sleep and worry during his watch at his mother's bedside, he asked his captain to rouse him when an alarm came in, as he feared he was so tired the bell would not awaken him. Captain Sarver agreed. Shortly after he went to sleep an alarm came in, but Captain Sarver let him sleep on, preferring to let him obtain much needed rest. When the next alarm came he tried to rouse him and found him dead. Phifer complained of suffering from indigestion just before he went to bed. He had been a member of the department for eleven years. |
