Dallas Firefighter Dies at Fire Station
Engineer Jess S. Mitchell

Engineer Jess S. Mitchell collapsed Saturday afternoon at Fire Station #1, located at Ross Avenue and Leonard Street, and was dead on arrival at Baylor Hospital.  A heart attack was cited as the cause of death.  An engineer at Station #1 since 1932, he was stricken at 3:10 p.m. while watching television in the station dayroom.

Jess Mitchell, Fireman, Dies

Dallas Fireman Jess S. Mitchell, 65, collapsed Saturday afternoon at Fire Station No. 1 and was dead on arrival at Baylor Hospital.  A heart attack was cited as cause of death.

Mr. Mitchell, a 34 year veteran of service with the Dallas Fire Dept., lived at 5230 Gurley.

An engineer at Station No. 1, Ross and Leonard, since 1932, he was stricken at 3:10 p.m. while watching television in the station dayroom.

A Plano native, Mr. Mitchell had been a Dallasite since 1917.  He attended Plano public schools and was employed by the Dallas Board of Education before joining the Fire Dept.

He was a member of the Forest Avenue Baptist Church and the Dallas County Firemen's Assn.

Rites are pending at George A. Brewer Funeral Home.

Mr. Mitchell's survivors include his wife, Mae; a son, J.C. of Refugio; three brothers, J.H. Mitchell, Plano; Joe Mitchell, Whitewright; and G.R. Mitchell, Dallas; a sister, Mrs Fay Turner, Richardson and two grandchildren.
