Fire Control and Rescue
Emergency Operation provides the residents of Dallas with fire suppression and protection, emergency rescue capabilities, and emergency medical first responder services.   A minimum of four firefighters respond on each fire engine and aerial ladder truck company.  There are 55 fire stations located strategically
throughout the city. These fire stations house 54 fire engines, 21 aerial ladder trucks, 5 aircraft rescue firefighting apparatus, 9 Booster pumpers, 1 Haz Mat Unit, as well as 32 front line Rescues and 9 Peak demand Rescues.

Safety
The responsibility for the safety of our firefighters is very important to our department.  The Safety Officer position has been upgraded to a Section Chief.  Improvements to our safety program have been the Incident Safety Officer training given to all Captains and above.  In addition, a designated safety chief is assigned to all structure fires.  All firefighters have undergone  "Saving our own" training, a program with both classroom and practical exercises to teach life-saving skills.  The use of Thermal imaging cameras has been taught to all firefighters to help in the search for trapped civilians and firefighters.

The Safety Officer is also responsible for the  SCBA program.   A recent overhaul of our SCBA program has been completed.  Firefighters have been trained and certified to check and repair one of our most important tools, our Self Contained Breathing Apparatus.  Our SCBA equipment is being updated on a continual basis.  The department has purchased a new cascade air vehicle and has consolidated all SCBA maintenance functions at Station 18.
