2 Firefighters Injured In Separate Incidents

Two firefighters were injured and transported to local hospitals in two separate incidents today.  The first incident occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m. and involved a major accident at LBJ and Lancaster Rd.  While fire crews were tending to injured motorists, a vehicle came from behind and struck a fire engine that was parked behind the original accident.  The impact seriously injured the driver of the compact car and caused minor injuries to a 31 y/o firefighter sitting in the cab of the fire engine.  The 40 y/o driver of the vehicle is suspected of driving while under the influence and is being questioned by DPD.  Both men were transported to Baylor Hospital.  The firefighter, a two-year member of the department, was treated and later released.

At around 4:30 a.m., not far from the accident scene, fire crews were battling a one-alarm fire in the 3000 block of Utah when one of the firefighters began to experience dizziness.  The Rescue crew determined that the 27 y/o firefighter was suffering from heat exhaustion and transported him to Methodist Hospital where he was treated and released.  The intense fire destroyed the one story, single-family home, causing approximately $60,000 in damages.  The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
