Fireworks:  Not Just a Nuisance

Dallas Fire-Rescue would like to provide you with important information regarding the illegal use of fireworks in the City of Dallas.

Facts Regarding Fireworks*

Ø      10 people lost their lives in 2000, 4 in 2002.

Ø Over 8,000 people are injured each year in the U.S.  These injuries were serious enough to require  Emergency Room treatment.

Ø      Sparklers, a product considered “safe” by most people, contributed to about 1,500 injuries in 2002.

Ø      Typical injuries caused by fireworks include burns, eye injuries, and finger and hand amputations.  Permanent blindness occurred in several cases.

Ø      Millions of dollars in property damage are attributed to the use of fireworks each year in the U.S.

In Dallas, Fireworks caused several residential fires that left several families homeless during the month of July, including a 3-alarm blaze that caused $125,000 in damages to an apartment complex.  Records of local injuries were not available at the time of this release.

 Fireworks Safety

Dallas Fire-Rescue does not provide any fireworks safety tips since it is illegal to possess fireworks in the City of Dallas and up to 5,000 feet from outside city limits.  Even so, fireworks have errant flight paths and are unpredictable.  In addition, faulty designs often cause them to explode too early.  We believe that there is no “safe” way to play with fireworks.

How can you help

Ø      Offer alternative activities to your family.  If your family wishes to view fireworks, take them to  watch a professional fireworks show.

Ø      Talk to your children about the dangers of fireworks and discourage them from watching others play with fireworks.  Studies have shown that bystanders are most likely to get injured by fireworks than the individuals doing the lighting.

Ø      Call 9-1-1 to report the illegal use of fireworks.  After all, it may be your home that catches on fire.  Watching your home burn is a terrible way to begin the New Year.

 Illegal Fireworks

Ø      Homemade fireworks and certain banned fireworks are extremely dangerous.  They are responsible for hundreds of injuries and various deaths.

Ø      The Federal Hazardous Substances Act prohibits explosives, such as M-80s, Cherry Bombs, Aerial Bombs and reloadable Mortar Shells.  It is a Federal crime to illegally manufacture, distribute and/or store these products.

 Enforcement

The Dallas Police Department will be patrolling neighborhoods and area lakes this New Year’s Eve and will confiscate fireworks and issue fines of up to $2000 to any individual with fireworks in their possession.  Dallas Fire-Prevention Officers will also be prepared to issue citations.
